Student Success Peer Mentor – Black Excellence York University (BE YU)

UNIT & DEPARTMENT: BE YU, Academic Success and Transition Programming

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be  as defined by Student Financial Services.   and must complete the   available at .

NUMBER OF POSITIONS: 2 summer positions and 4 fall/winter positions

RATE OF PAY: $16.55-$17.50/ hr (Level 1) as per Student Financial Services guidelines.

EMPLOYMENT TERM: Summer 2023 (May 6, 2024 through August 30, 2024) with possibility of renewal for Fall/Winter 2024-25

HOURS OF WORK: Summer term = 14-21 hours per week, typically 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. on Fridays). Fall/Winter term = 10-12 hours per week.

LOCATION: The position will be primarily an on-campus role at Keele campus with some virtual work scheduled to align with operational needs of the office.

The Work Study Student program provides on-campus job opportunities for eligible York University undergraduate students. Work Study Student employees are provided opportunities to contribute to support roles while developing valuable, relevant skills and work experience for the workplace. These roles offer a learning and development opportunity for Work Study Student employees to receive experiential on-the-job training, guidance and mentorship. Under the guidance of permanent staff members, Work Study Student employees will provide support to their relevant department/faculty in clerical, administrative and technical capacities.

As part of your Work-Study/LEAP experience, you will participate in Becoming YU, a program designed to support students in:

• creating meaningful goals and objectives;

ʉۢ recognizing the value of their personal, academic and professional experiences;

• identifying their competencies and skills; and

ʉۢ articulating their skills and experiences with confidence. Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your student employment supervisor/coach for reflecting on your progress and getting valuable feedback

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Black Excellence (BE YU) Program - The program provides Black students with the supports they need to transition to university and maximize their student experience on the path to graduation. Through workshops, specialized events, mentoring, academic advising and more, BE YU is designed to champion the academic, professional and personal success of York’s Black student 51³Ô¹ÏÍø. 

BE YU Student Success Mentor Leads serve as team leads to Student Success Mentors in the program and play a leadership role in the training and support of our peer mentor team. In consultation with full-time staff, they create and deliver engaging educational content and support the conditions necessary for effective peer mentorship aimed at maximizing student success.

Student Success Peer Mentor may be responsible for some or all the following tasks:

  1. Provide peer support by identifying student needs and make informed referrals to financial, academic, career and health resources on campus.
  2. Promote awareness and assist students with obtaining information about available programs and services.
  3. Share experiences, guidance and information through mentorship conversations and responding to questions and concerns.
  4. Facilitate group session to disseminate information via presentations.
  5. Acts as an ambassador and role model by helping students navigate York University’s processes and procedures.
  6. Assist with planning and implementing program initiatives, activities and campus events.
  7. Develop website and social media content to creatively collaborate with students to share ideas, provide information and promote events.
  8. Collaborate with campus partners to develop and promote mentorship programs.
  9. Stay well-informed on emerging and diverse programs.
  10. Assist with collecting and documenting program data, evaluations and outcomes.
  11. Draft reports, conduct research and develop resources.
  12. Assist with special projects and administrative duties.
  13. Attend and participate in team meetings.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

³§°ì¾±±ô±ô²õ a²Ô»å Q³Ü²¹±ô¾±´Ú¾±³¦²¹³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²õ &²Ô²ú²õ±è;

  • Knowledge of campus and 51³Ô¹ÏÍø resources, including academic, social, safety, health, cultural and others and able to refer students as appropriate. 
  • Demonstrated leadership ability. 
  • Knowledge of York’s services and resources for students. 
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills. 
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.  
  • Ability to connect with others across differences of culture, experience, identity etc.  
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and good attention to detail.   
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team.   
  • Eagerness to learn and take initiative.  
  • Proficient with MS Office such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint. 
  • Professional, punctual, and reliable. 
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and keep accurate and detailed records. 
  • Students who are a good fit for this position are dynamic, approachable, knowledgeable, and open to learning about themselves and others. They will show high levels of emotional intelligence combined with excellent communication and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to demonstrate organizational skills to carry out a variety of tasks.

MANDATORY TRAINING DATES:

Relevant and required training will be assigned and completed as part of the working hours of the job.
