Hours of Work: Summer: Up to 35 hours per week Fall/Winter: Up to 15 hours per week

Job Description 

The Student Life Assistant is responsible for supporting the delivery of student programming, activities and initiatives that are developed in the Student Life & Engagement Office at Markham Campus. 

The Student Life Assistant role will work along the Student Life and Engagement Coordinator to support programming related to student transition, student engagement, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø building, and fostering academic, personal and professional development for students at the Markham Campus. The Student Life Assistant team will focus on 4 main portfolios for the Markham Campus: Student Transition Programming, Digitial Engagement, Clubs and On-Campus Groups, and Leadership and Community Building. Moreover, the Student Life Assistant will deliver programming through the planning and execution of various events, workshops, outreach initiatives, collaborations with campus partners, and other specialized projects. The Student Life Assistant will also provide administrative support, including helping with program delivery, communications, maintenance of various records and documents, and any additional tasks, as needed.   

Major Areas of Responsibility 

  • The Student Life Assistant will support the Student Life and Engagement Coordinator in the planning and delivery of a broad range of engagement initiatives including programming related to student transition and engagement, campus involvement, professional and personal development, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø building, etc.  
  • Assist with the facilitation of small- and large-scale events, participates in student-facing outreach initiatives, engages with members of the York 51³Ô¹ÏÍø
  • Acts as an ambassador, mentor and role model by helping students navigate York University processes and procedures 
  • Work collaboratively with staff and students from both the Keele Campus and Markham Campus to advance shared programs and initiatives 
  • Support the development of specialized projects and pilot programs to better serve the needs of York Students at the Markham Campus 
  • Attends weekly meetings to assist with the planning and delivery of initiatives. 
  • Assist in implementing assessments strategies with the Student Life and Engagement Coordinator to measure the impact of the programming. 
  • Updates various documents and records and maintains the organization of shared documents in the appropriate locations. 
  • Regularly monitors group communications and our general mail account and responds to emails professionally and accurately within a timely manner.  
  • Attends required training and professional development sessions, as required. Attends regular meetings with the Student Life and Engagement Coordinator supervisors, responds to emails and messages on MS Teams within a timely manner.  
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate York student (we encourage applicants from diverse programs of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø)  
  • Must be work-51³Ô¹ÏÍø eligible  
  • Good academic standing  
  • Eagerness to learn and take initiative 
  • Knowledge of York’s services and resources for students 
  • Students who are a good fit for this position are dynamic, approachable, knowledgeable and open to learning about themselves and others. They will show high levels of emotional intelligence combined with excellent adaptability, organizational skills, and team-building skills 

Skills   

  • Extensive knowledge of York University and campus resources and able to effectively share this information with students 
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of the support needs of students 
  • Ability to work supportively with students in a confidential and professional manner 
  • Demonstrated commitment to peer support and the value of post-secondary education  
  • Demonstrate leadership ability 
  • Strong presentation skills and excellent oral and written communications skills  
  • Some graphic design/ artistic ability, use of social media and marketing and/or communications background is an asset  
  • Great attention to detail   
  • Strong organizational and time management skills 
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team
